Growing Plants Lapbook....made a start!

I haven't been blogging alot recently...for many reasons! Partly because I haven't had the time, partly because I have been debating whether or not I should continue blogging and partly because we haven't been doing much "schooling" round here!!!!! (shhhhh thats a secret!).

I really need to pull up my socks and get back into some sort of schooling rhythm inshallah....and get back to those workboxes!
I haven't been using the workboxes because I haven't been planning a great deal of work, and instead just pulling something out quickly as we go......but that is resulting in the old negative behaviour from K again as she throws a tantrum not wanting to do "work"!
.......subhanAllah put everything in a workbox and its like a totally different child alhamdulillah! I have to understand that K definitely benefits from being able to see where her "beginning" and where her "end" is......so, mental note to self.....use stop being lazy and fill up the workboxes!

Anyway, after missing a number of weeks from our Tuesday group Science Club, today we started again to the great pleasure of K who has been asking every Tuesday for the past month "is everyone coming for science club?" only to be told "not this week".

We started a new topic Growing Plants from the government standards site, but rather than working in exercise books as we have been doing, I thought would be nicer to produce a lapbook inshallah. So each week the girls will add a new element to the lapbook to complete over several weeks (although I don't think this topic will take that long!)

Today we just made the cover to encourage the girls to add new work inside their folder each week. There were 5 girls today and mashAllah, the folders all looked so nice at the end on the table together. So cute!

We also planted a french bean seed to watch grow and record its growth in a diary (which will go into the lapbook inshallah).
Instructions for growing a bean can be found inshallah HERE!

I made the Bean Diary by folding story paper (half lined and half plain paper) vertically down the centre and cutting to the right size (top and bottom) before stapling together with a cover. For home work the kids all need to make their own diary cover before next week inshallah.

I would have printed a diary but my printer is broken at the moment! If you go onto Sparklebox they have a bean diary, a Sunflower diary and a cress diary you can just print and fill in.......but I do think it is kind of nice to make your own with your own cover.....makes it more individual :) (or am I just saying that because my printer is currently down?).

I'll add elements to the lapbook as I produce them inshallah and at the end try to combine them into one file.
In the mean time, the front cover can be downloaded inshallah HERE! ......note: this cover is to be cut out around the boxes and stuck down to make a collarge cover...I haven't designed the layout to leave it as it is on the print out. Decorate as you wish.....add dried flowers, pressed flowers, leaves, cut outs, punch outs, draw a picture......whatever you like!

Maashaa Allaah nice work! Love to see how it goes on! Oh take it easy and get back slowly sis and try to do what really K wants to do. I know you need to act on it a bit extra but at the end of the day its worth it to see her enjoying learning!

  3. Assalaamu alaikum sister :)

I feel like I can relate to this post, my daughter Imaan was always the eager, enthusiastic one and I was chasing her needs always trying too make sure the appropriate resources were available for her thirsty brain. Now she is so easily distracted and is always asking are we done yet, is it just this page mommy..etc as she can't wait to go and play!

At first I thought unschooling was the way to go... following the learning needs of the child but I am not sure I like the approach 100% as there are some things which just needs to get done whether we like it or not. So I am doing a bit of that and some tuning into what her interests are and creating lessons based on that. It is a bit of fly by the seat of your pants but she loves it.

I like the workboxes masha Allah, I think Imaan would benefit from being able to see what she needs to complete in a day. Thanks for sharing your experiences with the method.

  4. wa'alaikum asalaam sis,
I agree with you sis, I like the concept of unschooling however as you say, I believe there are some things we just have to do whether we want to or not!
I love the workboxes alhamdulillah, ...Alhamdulillah, indeed all thanks and praise is for Allah, we get through so much more in one day when using the workboxes!
